Russian is the main language of Russia, as well as an official language of Belarus, Kazakhstan, and Kyrgyzstan. It is commonly used in all 15 of the post-Soviet states. Russian is spoken by more than 258 million people worldwide.
Russian is closely related to the rest of the Slavic languages, especially Ukrainian, Belarusian, and Rusyn. The written Russian alphabet uses Cyrillic characters.
